Fantastic story. I was so happy when Ginny finally came into the room and was there to start helping Harry with his grief. She truly is his greatest source of comfort and joy in the good time and the bad. No one understands him and can help him the way that Ginny can, not even Hermione and Ron. They're just soulmates. It also helped him once he started wanting to take care of her and her grief. Moving from feelings of powerlessness to his protective instincts for those he loves always helps Harry to deal with things, in my opinion.
Yes, I got the Friends reference, too. It was funny, if you knew what it meant, but it still would work in the story, if you didn't.
Great job! |

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! This seems like a perfect "missing moment" from HBP. and completely consistent with canon. I agree that there must have been moments like this for the "greatest source of comfort" label to be used.
I also find it completely believable that some of Harry's dorm-mates would feel excluded by "Potter and his circle", without realizing that they might not have been able to deal with the implications of being included.
I have wondered how JKR envisioned having only Luna and Neville show up when the DA coins were activiated once again. Your scene with Dean and Seamus would indicate that they had the coins, realized they'd been activated, but ignored them. I'd always thought that the coins had either been spent or tucked away in a trunk somewhere, assuming they would not be used again. With the coins again being prominent at the end of DH - to get everyone back to Hogwarts, your idea seems to be more realistic.
So, again, thank you. I enjoyed your story, and the tangents it made my mind wander down! |

Hehe, I got it as soon as I read it.. The whole Ross and Rachel "We were on a break!" thing lol.. nicely done. |

These are honestly some of my favorite fanfic stories. The ones that tell a smaller piece of the story, what went on when we weren't looking. It was exactly what I pictured in my mind for these two. I hope Harry remembers moments like this. So he realizes he cannot do this without Ginny in the seventh book. Great job, you almost had me there for a second too. |
isolde_of_ireland Tuesday 28th March 2006 15:22 | His Best Source of Comfort |
and forever! You do an incredible job of writing Harry and Ginny's grief in losing Professor Dumbledore. Grief that deep is something that is very hard to write, and you did it, along with the sense of comfort they intilled in each other! Yay for you! |

"You love those emoticons, I see, lol. What is Charmingly_Holly? I'm guessing it's something really fluffy but I fear I must be missing out?"
Yes. I just love 'em!
If you don't know who Charmingly_Holly is, you certainly are missing out! She's an author at fanfiction.net. She's really good. Some are serious , some are sad , but most are hilarious . Whenever I read something sad, I go read "Help! The Butterdish is Attacking Me!" or "Quick! Grab the Cheese Wheels and Run!" .... yeah, odd names, but they're great stories! You should check her out! (that's you checking her out!) Even though I like PS much better than ff.net, she doesnt' have a PhoenixSong account.... ah well!

Well that was brilliant, as always. Loved the description of how Harry was dealing w/ DD's death when he was trying to sleep. And the referances to canon really made this like a forgotten snippet from HBP. As always, your Ginny and Harry are my fav and you don't lose any of their personality here. Keep up the great work. I'm hoping for something from CotD - hinthint, nudgenudge. :-D
Can't wait to read more of your work,

I always enjoy reading your stuff. Thanks for adding this moment. I agree with you that there just had to be moments like these between the two of them, even if JKR censored them out. |

Thanks! Yes, I, too, longed for more H/G moments to read, but it does leave plenty of stuff for us to write about. And we're canon now, baby! |

*sniff*.... Beautiful, heartwrenching and heartwarming. Terribly
sad, but still filled with hope. A wonderful description of how
it is to be in shock after a beloved one's unsuspected death. In
short - absolutely marvellous, like everything else you write.
Thanks!

Oh, you've been sorely missed, Melindaleo, sorely missed but now our hearts and minds are full of joy again because you've posted another story - Yippeeeee!!! *does wild shimmy*
The story in itself is really quite sad but gives a well-chosen and well-written insight / explanation to why Ginny is his best source of comfort .
As always the writing and storytelling is impeccable (sigh - you don't make it easy for us other mere mortals when you write as good as you do - not really fair to set the standard of writing this high *sulks* ) and the dialogue was nicely flowing as well, felt quite in character.
In short - brilliant! Thanks for writing and sharing this!!!! |

Aww, Spark, you're too kind to me! I've really missed your emotives so it's nice to see them again. I'm glad you enjoyed this missing moment. As I said, I think these moments had to have been there, I was just determined to find one that hadn't been done 5000 other times already, lol. |

what an amazing story!!!!!! i am so happy that you wrote this missing moment, it was so sweet and sad and just so h/g. i think you are right about harry and ginny having little moments like this. i mean they were together for about month so they had to have had moments pure fluff. thanks for this story i miss reading your stuff, my weekends just aren't the same. |

Hmmm... I gather Harry wasn't thinking clearly enough to Summon the invisibility cloak, eh?
And I note that both Harry and Ginny rather avoided addressing "the breakup."
Still, the stpry is well done! :-)
|
Sunday 11th September 2005 18:58 | His Best Source of Comfort (Author Response) |
Well, the story takes place before the break up, that was after the funeral. This one takes place the same night he died. I suppose Harry could have summoned the Invisibility Cloak, but I don't think he wanted to even think about the Astronomy Tower just then. |
Wild Magelet Sunday 11th September 2005 18:08 | His Best Source of Comfort |
Heh. I can suddenly picture Dean as this avid Friends watcher (not that I can talk!!). And can see him standing up at H/G's wedding and bellowing "We were just on a break!"
Lovely fic. There were moments in there that almost had me teary as well (the keening noise Harry made, for instance, because it's only in your worst moments of grief that you make that sound and often don't even realise it). And the romantic side of it was beautiful: some moments of pure fluffiness, which always improves my day, and genuine despair and hope. Wonderful job; I loved reading it. |
Sunday 11th September 2005 18:55 | His Best Source of Comfort (Author Response) |
OMG, now I want to write a oneshot about that wedding, lol! Too funny! He's mom is a Muggle, too.
I'm glad you recognized that keening wail. I'd shut my eyes and was trying to imagine somehow desperately trying to hold himself together, and that's where my mind went. |
Bart Sunday 11th September 2005 18:07 | His Best Source of Comfort |
Harry wasn't aware when the big, heavy teardrops had begun to leak from his eyes, but found he no longer cared. He wasn't crying in front of Ginny...he was crying with her. Somehow, sharing the grief was making both of them feel better.
Wonderful line, from a wonderful story, Melindaleo. |

I can see it for years to come "But we were on a break!"
Congratulations Melinda for another excellent sneak look in to a
missing moment from HBP. You captured the angst and emotional
overload of grief in a frighteningly accurate way - I was right there
with Harry, forcing myself to control my breathing and not cry
too.

Sunday 11th September 2005 18:49 | His Best Source of Comfort (Author Response) |
Aww, thanks! I admit, the end of HBP had me sniffling heavily and gasping for breath, too. There had to have been some private comforting scenes between Harry and Ginny for him to refer to her that way, right? |
apatel37 Sunday 11th September 2005 15:00 | His Best Source of Comfort |
Excellent little ficlet, I loved the angst you put in here, as I felt that book 6 seemed to be missing that quite a bit. And the fluffy scene with Ginny was just nice, it felt so warm and fuzzy.
Loved the friends reference in there as well. "We were on a break.." indeed. |
Sunday 11th September 2005 18:46 | His Best Source of Comfort (Author Response) |
Thanks! Personally, I loved HBP, but I if I got to make a wish, it would be for a little more angst and depth into the feelings of the characters, particularly about Sirius. Ah well, though...that's what fanfiction is for. |

This is absolutely priceless! It's definitely how I would imagine them being, and it's abosolutely perfectly in character. And yes, I caught the Friends reference, and also love that you chose that phrase from Harry's thoughts as the title. Just perfect. Completely perfect, and totally brilliant! |
