Oh! How beautiful! Is that pencil or charcoal?

Wednesday 20th September 2006 08:40Author Response
Thank you.

It was done with an HB pencil and a 2B pencil (both are unpleasantly scratchy at times and are just asking to be tossed out the window... lol). I have never used charcoal before, and to be honest, I am nervous about trying it.

Thank you!

I am glad you liked the shading. I had fun doing it. And, although I am sorry to have got you a bit choked up, I am happy that the mood of the picture was conveyed.

Thanks for the comment.

wow. I feel stupid now- I thought that it meant Sirius was mourning... *is sheepish*
Stil think it looks like a younf Remus, though

hmmm... I think it looks like Remus mourning more than Sirius.
Also, the lines and striations in the clothing are amazing, details great- this is a fabulous pic.

I had a lot of fun drawing his shirt. I am glad you enjoyed the detail.

This is a gorgeous picture. It gets the mood across perfectly. I can see Harry sitting like this during his time at the Dursley's before Dumbledore came to get him. Great job!

Thank you

Trying to figure out how to set the mood for this picture was really challenging. I am glad you found it effective.

Thanks for the comment. I am glad you liked it.

I really enjoy this picture! the medium is very nice, and having Harry's face in shadow seems to accentuate his anguish
Sunday 10th September 2006 09:57Author Response
Thank you

I decided to do his face in shadow as I thought that etail would detract from the mood and body language.

I am glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment.

Oh, wow. The main purpose of pencil drawings is to focus on shadowing, obviously, and you really mastered it. Gorgeous.
Saturday 9th September 2006 18:03Author Response
Thank you!

I love playing with the shadowing, which is probably why I prefer sketching in pencil. Thank you for thinking I have done a good job here.

i love this one so much. the way you shaded his face so it's just pencil and no features puts a mourning mood on the picture. i also love how you did his shirt. beautiful work!
Saturday 9th September 2006 17:59Author Response
Thank you.

I deliberately chose to shade in his face as I thought the detail would detract form the body language. But doing the shirt in detail was both fun and challenging.

I am glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment

aww *heart breaks*

love the tonal effect created by the creases of the shirt- very cool in contract with the flat shading, - gives it a fun sense of 3d!!
Friday 8th September 2006 12:32Author Response
Thanks! I am glad you liked the shading.

I hadn't noticed the 3D effect until you mentioned it. I think I had been a bit involved in the lines and shadows. But you have made a good point there.

Thanks for the comment!

I love your use of shadow in this picture. It conveys so much while showing so little detail in his face...one automatically knows Harry is greiving. The dtail you've put into the wrinkles of his shirt is awesome, so natural in how they show the curves of his body. This is rapidly becoming one of my favorite "grieving Harry" pictures. Thanks for sharing this very private moment with us.
Thursday 7th September 2006 23:23Author Response
Thanks for the wonderful comments.

I love building the shadow in sketches, and I am happy that you think I got it right. I deliberately decided not to show detail in his face as I thought it would detract from the body language and I hoped that the lack of detail would represent the emotional turmoil he was feeling. Doing his shirt in detail so that it constrasted to his face, was a lot of fun.

Thank you for your brilliant words.

Breathtaking! The study of light and dark is wonderful and keeping Harry's face in shadow is the perfect touch. I am in awe.
Thursday 7th September 2006 19:26Author Response
Why thank you!

I am glad you approve of keeping Harry's face in the shadows. I thought it would be more effective than sharp detail. It was fun doing the contrast with the detail in his shirt though.

Thanks for the review!

I love this! Even though you really can't see his face, the body language is so telling. Great detail on the shirt!
Thursday 7th September 2006 17:57Author Response
Thank you.

I put a lot of thought into the body language, A sketch doesnt have the luxury of words, so I had to make sure Harry was saying as much as he could with slumped shoulders.

I had a lot of fun on the shirt.

Thanks for the review!

Wow. You made me gasp! This is such a desperate moment for Harry. You can tell that he feels utterly lost and broken. The wrinkles of his shirt are really exquisite. This is a beautiful piece.
Thursday 7th September 2006 13:26Author Response
Thank you!

I am glad that you think the atmosphere in that scene was portrayed in the sketch. I really tried hard to have him come across with the right emotions.

As to the wrinkles in his shirt, they were really fun to do.

Thanks for the brilliant review.

Excellent, excellent work. You catch that period of time between being a boy and being a young man perfectly. Please share more of your work with us. Looking forward to it. Again, brilliant.
Thursday 7th September 2006 12:43Author Response
Thank you.

I am glad you liked it. I never thought of the age between boyhood and manhood before. As Harry is nearing manhood in OotP, I am glad you think I captured it well - even though it was completely accidental... lol.

As to sharing more, I have more sketches on my LiveJournal, but I am sorry to say that this one is in a class of its own. Oddly enough, it was the easiest one to draw.

Thanks again

Good grief (no pun intended, sorry!!), the detail on the shirt is amazing!!!! you've really managed to convey Harry's grief here, well done!

I am glad you feel that Harry's grief was portrayed well. As to his shirt, I enjoyed drawing that.

Wow. This is amazing. I especially like how you can't see Harry's face. Even though most people do a great job, it is always tricky when you try to draw a character when everyone has their own ideas of how he should look. This is perfect. It captures the anger, despair, shock, and numbness that come with sudden loss. I think most people would be hard pressed to say that this isn't exactly how they picture Harry. Excellent, excellent job.
Thursday 7th September 2006 11:58Author Response
Thank you!

Your review had me speechless there for a while.

I deliberately chose not to show Harry's face in the picture. Mostly, I wanted the shadow to be, dare I say 'symbolic', of the emotions he was feeling (the numbness etc, that you can't really express in words). Contrasting that with the detail in his shirt was fun to do.

Thank you for the great review. I am glad you liked it.

Wow, this is amazing. It one of the few pictures of Harry mourning that make me feel sad with him, rather than annoyed at him. It makes him seem like a real person, rather than an self-centered little emo punk. I love it. Keep it coming!
Thursday 7th September 2006 11:28Author Response
Oh wow! That it a brilliant compliment!

I spent a lot of time thinking about the body language for this one. Perhaps that is what doesn't make him look all emo punkish.

Thanks again. I am glad you liked it.

Sooo sad! Its only a silhouete but it shows that it is Harry-depressed and desolate. You convey the emotions quiete well.
Thursday 7th September 2006 07:57Author Response
Thank you

When I drew it, I thought that using sharp details on Harry's face would not be as effective with putting the feeling of loss across. I am glad you thought it worked.

Wow. The details on this one are so nice. How did you get the wrinkles so perfect? And the light reflecting on his hair? It's a very sad piece, but so very good!
Thursday 7th September 2006 07:34Author Response
Thanks.

I looked at a picture for the wrinkles. I don't think I could have done them as detailed without some form of a visual aid. As to the hair, it was my imagination.

Glad you like it.
