“
Mum?” “Yes, Billy?”
The redhead scowled at the childish name. For so long he had been trying to get his parents to call him Bill, but his mother insisted on the name that made him sound like a two-year-old.
“Where did Ron come from?”
Molly paused for a minute, trying to decide the best way to answer this question to a ten-year-old. She looked at Arthur, who had his head firmly buried in the paper, clearly showing he was not going to get involved.
“Well, he was in my tummy and then when he was ready, he came out.”
“Yes, but how?”
“How what?”
“How did he get in there?”
At this Arthur choked on the tea he was drinking and quickly stood up. “I think I should go and, er, check on the chickens.” He quickly tried to make his escape towards the back door, but one glare from Molly and he sat down again, realising this was one conversation he could not escape from.
“Why don’t you sit down?” Molly said kindly to her son, before sitting down herself, next to Arthur. “Now then, you see, when two people love each other like me and your dad do, then they get married. Then, usually, they decide they would like to share all that love with someone else so they decide to have a baby.”
“Is that what happened when you and dad had me?”
“Um…yes, though sometimes a baby can be a surprise which makes it even more special,” she replied, glancing at Arthur, who was trying hard not to laugh.
“So you two must love each other a lot then, because you have me and Charlie and Percy and Fred and George and Ron.” Bill looked at his nine-month-old brother sleeping soundly in his baby carrier.
“Yes, we had so much love to share that we decided to have lots of children.”
“So what do you do to have a baby?”
“Well,” she said smiling, “it starts with a kiss and then…” but before she could get any further Bill interrupted.
“A kiss? Does that mean you and Dad have kissed?”
“Of course!”
“But that’s horrible!” He turned to his dad. “I can’t believe you kissed a girl!”
His dad laughed. “Yes, I did; actually, I’ve kissed her lots of times.”
“So, to have a baby you have to kiss?”
“Yes but – ”
“I’m going to tell Charlie!” Bill interrupted. With that, he ran out of the kitchen to find his younger brother.
“Well,” said Molly, “I suppose that could have gone better. You weren’t much help, though.”
“Sorry, dear, but this is more your department. So, how long are you going to let him think kissing makes babies?”
“Oh, he’s got years before he needs to know the truth!”
“I love you,” he said to her fondly.
“What was that for?”
“I just remembered how special you are – I think we still have a lot of love to share.” He leaned in and kissed her, it was a long, romantic kiss, the kind that reminded her of their Hogwarts days when every kiss was a stolen moment in an empty corridor that burned with a fire that she knew would never die out.
Suddenly she found herself alone in the passageway behind the painting of the Warlock on the rarely visited second floor corridor. Every other second she would glance over at the entrance, waiting for it to open. Her watch told her it was almost midnight and sure enough just as the second hand clicked over the twelve, the painting creaked open and he entered. She ran to him and he pulled her into an embrace. They stood for what seemed like hours, each absorbed in the kiss. They had both waited so long to finally be alone and now they were free: free to do what they wanted, free to fall in love.
As Arthur kissed his wonderful wife, he knew he would always love the way it felt to kiss her, to be truly loved by her.
It was their wedding night. As they lay on the bed, Molly kissed him in a way she had never done before and he knew that she would be with him for ever. Nine months later she introduced him to his first son and he kissed her with the same intensity she had shown him months before.
She became completely engrossed in the moment. She forgot that she had five children that could walk in at any second. All that mattered was her and Arthur.
It was March and she and Arthur were celebrating a belated Valentine, making the most of the fact Bill was at his Auntie Muriel’s. Dinner lay forgotten as the two allowed themselves to show feelings without the worry of their one-year-old walking in. They held each other, their kisses revealing the longing and desperation they felt to be with each other, to truly have each other. When her second son was born nine months later, she knew through Arthur’s reaction how he still felt about her and their growing family.
Arthur never wanted this to end. All he could ever imagine was being with her like this, completely happy.
Christmas was approaching and, having dropped the boys off with their babysitter, the couple were about to leave for some last minute shopping when Molly decided to give him the present she had been saving. The kiss was deep and powerful, suddenly it was all they could do to keep their hands off each other. After Percy was born, they joked that the boys could have had more presents the previous Christmas if it hadn’t been for the distraction of their brother.
She began to pull away but he put his arms around her, telling her to stay, so she obeyed.
News of her brothers’ deaths had just reached them and she sobbed into Arthur’s chest, longing for the pain to go away. She felt his hands on her face and then he was kissing her, more tenderly and more lovingly than he ever had before. She knew that he would make everything all right. The kisses stopped but she pulled him back towards her, craving the love and attention that could take away they pain of losing her family. When the twins were born, she knew the love she felt for them was born from the pain of her brothers’ deaths.
Arthur didn’t know why, but he couldn’t let her go. He was no longer aware of where they were, only of her and how amazing she was.
Just eighteen months ago, he had surprised her wife with a holiday for just the two of them. During the week they had spent in the secluded holiday cottage, they had shared more kisses than they could remember and with each one she had told him that he was the most important person to her in the world. After the trip, the news that Ron was coming was hardly a surprise to the two, though after his birth he knew she wondered how long it would be before she could finally have a daughter.
At last they pulled away from each other; for a moment they sat in silence, just staring at each other, both knowing what the other had been thinking about. At last she said, in a soft voice,
“Maybe it really does start with a kiss.”
