A Fairy Tale Ending
This is a very unique concept and well done. I did not like Giselle - they decide they are better off as friends, but definitely friends with benefits. I'm surprised infant Harry is given to two teenagers to raise, but I guess no one every really looked after him very well. Hermione's breast feeding was pretentious - she doesn't bother to address the adoption until he brings it up, but she feels its important to breast feed him. I've adopted both my children, they were bottle fed and are fine.
Poor Ginny, what an awful dilemma. I'm glad she didn't have to watch Giselle and Harry pawing each other. I'm glad he finally remembered her, but she deserved a lot better.

I think that I have read this story over a dozen times, and I still can't get enough of it! I really like the idea behind this story, and I would love to see it expanded in a sequel. I don't know if you could do that, but I think that it would be hilarous to read. 2 Original pranksters and a new batch of Weasleys all armed to the teeth with WWW products. Oh the Slytherin carnage to be had!

Yay!!! I was wondering how you would make this all come together. Props on a TRULY original idea. I've never seen it anywhere else.

I'm glad you wrote this as a short story. Some authors would have tried to turn it into a novel-length and it would have dragged (it seems like everyone is doing these "re-writes" lately, and they spend too much time retelling and not enough time on their own ideas).

My only complaint is the kissing scene between Harry and Giselle. I didn't have a problem with them kissing, it just seemed a bit too passionate. Maybe my inner prude was coming out, or maybe I'm just too dead-set on Harry/Ginny, but it just seemed a bit out of the blue.

Anyway GREAT story!! I'm going to go check out your other fics. THANKS!

I just re-read this story four years to the day that you posted it (well, one day late, I suppose) and I had to leave another review for it. Such a simple concept, executed perfectly. So perfectly that I want so much to see the next five minutes. But in the end, you left it perfectly undone. So... thanks again for writing such a blissfully wonderful tale.

that did take my breath away for sure, i almost physically felt this ending.
immensely beautiful. really well written. and, even though i sort of anticipated the plot would end with something like this (i had envisioned some extremely long-term transfiguration however ) and i dreaded it would just become way too fluffy (for me that is), i... thanks so so much for sharing.

I know you don't really need another review after already having so many, but . . . WOW! I love the "fairy tale" ending! I love that Harry gets both a happy childhood and gets to stay with his friends at the same time - as bizarre as the whole thing was. I was relieved that Percy was not really evil and that Ginny was not really dead. You wrapped up your whole beautifully winding tale in a neat, big red bow, and I am amazed. Brilliant - absolutely brilliant job!!!

Very clever, and very original. A little weird with the Ron/Hermione/Harry dynamic, but you made it work flawlessly. Hermione got her wish to mother Harry. I was certain you were going to reveal that Percy killed Ginny, nice misdirection! HP + GW, how bittersweet (at that point). You also brought the reader (well, this one anyway) personally into the story at the end wondering along with Harry what happened to Ginny?

What smut are you referring to in your note at the beginning of the story? I thought Harry's kiss on Ginny's lips was VERY chaste!

Oh! How wonderful! That was a fantastic story, and kept me guessing right til the end. Very very touching and emotional, from Harry's relationship with Mum&Dad Ron and Hermione, to Giselle, to the ending.

One tiny tiny thing. In Britain generally if someone feels chuffed, they are feeling pleased about something or themselves, rather than angry or mad. There were a couple of times when you said people were chuffed, and it didn't make sense to me.

But that was a wonderful story, thank you very much.

Woah......so clever and so fitting. Nice way to work in the Draught of Living Death he he he. I love all the interesting emotional realms you open up by having Hermione and Ron become Harry's parents. You have taken the somewhat cliche (not that we don't all enjoy it..) fanon concept of Harry finding a family by marrying Ginny and Hermione marrying Ron so that they are all Weasleys and given it a truly original twist. I also really enjoy the relationship between Giselle and Harry, sensual without truly sexual, very maturely blurry. I also have great respect for the way you fit the story into the ancient Fairytale format, so subtly. I have to admit that even with the warning/big hint of the title I didn't see it coming until Harry began to see it himself. Thouroughly enjoyable and intelligent, I'm glad PS chose to highlight it or I might never have found it.

It has been many years since I read this story for the first time and I am as blown away now as I was then. I know what is happening now but still remember gasping at -

Now, after seventeen years, he had found Ginny again only to have her sleeping. Any second now, he expected to hear Voldemort's high, cold laugh just before he killed him. This had to be a nightmare. Fate couldn't be this cruel.

"Just like in the fairy tales, mate," he heard Ron speak. "There's only one way to break the spell."

Really cool and awesome and fascinating (and insert more superlatives here) idea! Could easily have been so much longer (though the whole Ginny effect probably would have been lessened), and the duality of Harry's previous and current life is great stuff!

A Fairy Tale Ending
Dear BJH
Thank you so much for a great read
Maybe this sound's like a bit stupid but I've got to tell you, I read this last night before going to sleep. I simply loved it. Then I had dreams about it
I was relieving some parts of the story and something like what Harry was going through. I sometimes was in Harry's and sometimes in Ginny's place. In all it was an interesting night So I had to tell you what I felt about the story: Very good, very good

Your story had a very different and interesting plot. I really love the reading HP from this point of view. It was like the Harry was finding out about the story just like us, but then again it was HIM all along. And you could keep Ginny's mystery until the end. You had me guessing till the last minute. And by the time Hermione asked Harry about that ... just like Harry that was the time it clicked in my mind! And like him I Just wanted to ran for the stairs. I had thought of anything but that, and when it came to it I thought 'its just too easy to be like this' but then again why not after all it was a Fairy Tale ending! And they WERE witches and wizards!

I'm rambling and I'm not sure I'm making very much scence anyway, usually I'm too lazy to write a review -I'm not proud of it- which you have guessed by now. But I liked your story very much and wanted to share my experience with you. Now I'm going to read your other fics

To others who haven't read the story yet:

Wow...  Oh.  My.  Goodness.  What a fic!  The plot, the way the story unfolded, the writing style - so perfect, it's no wonder it ended up winning Best Overall One-Shot Fiction.  Well deserved price, indeed.  I'm quite happy Percy redeemed himself, and that Molly finally got to know the truth.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us all.  I ablsolutely loved it.

umm...

wow?

this was an amazing story...the only thing that i think couldve made it better is if it were stretched out as a full novel-length.  aside from that, it's great!!  definitely deserves the "best one-shot fic award" that it won.

one thing though...i cant help but feel as if things were left unfinished between Harry and Giselle...i mean...the last couple of scenes with her, they still kept things feeling a bit incomplete i think...

and as for the ending, that was great...very well done.

BJ... I just re-read this for the 87th time (ok, probably not *actually* that many times, but I have read it more than twice, I know!!)... and I just wanted to tell you how wonderfully it *still* affects me.  Sooo many lines, so many concepts just make me wanna hug the stuffing out of Harry (if I were Hermione in this, I'd have done the same darn thing!!), among other reactions.  This is just absolutely, amazingly, completely brilliant, and it doesn't lose any of that brilliance when it's re-read, either.  EXCELLENT, excellent job!!

What a wonderfully written, beautiful story.  I read this from the Voting competition, and absolutely love it (as if you couldn't tell :)).  It was so sweet the way harry called Ron and Hermione "Daddy and Mommy", and it's such an unusual concept.  It nearly made me cry.  I hope it wins an award, it deserves one.

This was excellent, Harry growing up all over again in a loving family.

Will you be doing a follow up story with him and Ginny? Crikey it would be tough for her to fit back in to her family after seventeen years.

Congratulations.  You win.  Everything.

Quick question though.  Would Harry now have Fawkes' powers?  I mean, did he integrate with Fawkes, or was it a one time thing?

WOW. That was really awesome, just loved the whole plot you made, really new and different (in a good way:-). I haven't read something like this in the 1000s of other fanfics I've read. A really unique plot, giving Harry his lost childhood (in some way:-) and keeping his true love -Ginny. I wondered what happened to her, first I thought she might be Giselle, but that would not work, since she was part Vela, and Ginny is not. You really made me wonder, because I so wanted Harry to end up with his true love. The ending was a true fairy tale ending, just the way it is suposed to be. Keep up the great writting.

A Fairy Tale Ending

Wow, I don't even know where to start.

The premise is amazing for this.  The conflict of emotions that Ron, Hermione, and Harry dealt with would have been unbelievable.  You did a really good job of that early on especially with Hermione, it fell off as you dealt with just Harry later on in the story.

The manner in which you saved Percy, that he was a spy even Dumbledore didn't know about was brilliant.  I have never seen anything so clever in any fanfic, and I have read 100's if not 1000's.  It is worthy of JKR herself, and I'm not even sure she would come up with something that good.

I spent the whole thing wondering what happened to Ginny.  After the first argument between Harry and Ron, I suspected Percy had killed her, though you did not say it directly, and I never once picked up in the story that you talked about Grammy a number of times, but never Grandpa.

Your ending was perfect, that she wakes up from his kiss and knows it is him.  Of course it was, for her there could never be anyone else.

This is the absolute best fanfic I have read.  Great job.

That is undeniably brilliant. I really don't know what else to say, I am still recovering from that slightly quivery feeling inside after experiencing some great emotion and mopping the tears from my eyes.

The Giselda side was brilliantly handled, I hope her 'rock' works out or someone equally sweet.

Ahh, well back to real life.

Thank you so much - I have been refreshed and inslired by your wonderful story.

Wow, I must say that this was the first story using this concept that I have found and I really enjoyed it. Although Harry had a much more pleasant life the second time around, you really have to feel sorry for the guy of having to technically live through hell twice, and still have to put up with the usual teen problems.
Really enjoyed it, and understanding that it is almost impossible to write a sequel for this with the same effect makes it sad that there isn't more.

Thank you very much.

A Fairy Tale Ending

All I can say is that this more than brilliant. Original, touching, and genuinely moving.

I hate having to describe unique stories. I never know quite what to say.

I did particularly enjoy seeing that 2nd time around Harry had things a lot easier, both with lessons and just life in general. That he played pranks as well was the icing on the cake.

His essential Harryness shone through in the end, as I always knew that it would. The ending was sweet, and surprising as well. Your skillful false trail had me fooled until very late on about what happened to Ginny, and only at the very end did I guess what had actually happened.

This is a wonderful story, and I'm delighted to have stumbled across it. It deserves to be better known, and I'll be doing my best to get more people to come and read it.

A Fairy Tale Ending

Brilliant. Simply brilliant. There are so many unique points in this story and they all flow together amazingly well to make a truly compelling storyline. And it's really to the point, too. That you put this together in 23,000 words and not five times that many is almost as impressive as the story itself.

I really like how everything you did was so creative but still rooted in canon. Bending Fawkes' rescue of Dumbledore as a way to give Harry a second chance at life is such an amazing premise for a story. The notion of Hermione mothering Harry is just hilarious. And the dreams were a great way to add emphasis. You really did a nice job building up the contrast for the characters as Harry gets older: Harry seeing Hermione and Ron as parents or best friends; Hermione seeing Harry as best friend and son. Hermione's angst really personalized things.

Hermione's angst also added to the mystery, which is the other impressive thing about this story. It was obvious Ginny was going to work her way back into this somehow -- especially after Fleur says Giselle knows Harry's heart belong to another -- but you do a great job keeping the secret until the end. That it's simple, a true story-tale ending, works all the better because I couldn't help wonder why I didn't figure it out earlier.

There was a lot more I liked in this -- Giselle's spunky character, Percy's story, Harry's fight to find himself, "Grandfather" Dumbledore -- but I think I've rambled on long enough at far to late an hour. Superb work, though!

Wow - I am really blown away by this story. The idea is a great one, and one that could have gone really badly if handled wrong. But it was really well done. I think I will be thinking of this for a while (kind of like the first time I saw "Terminator"!)

I, too, really like Giselle, and feel free to bring her back. A funny side note - I know a guy naked Gabe who is exactly as you describe. A big lug of a guy, way soft-spoken. That part of the story was easy to imagine!

Thanks for sharing this. It was great.

Okay,

Now that I've taken some time to digest the story, will try and say some more things.  After reading feedback from other people - don't write a sequel :)  Sometimes stories are better left open-ended.

Someone else said it would have been nice to see snapshots of Harry / Ginny in his life first time through.  I'm not convinced that was necessary.  I think his growing apart from Gee was because of his growing realization that he was actually in love with Ginny.  Maybe that needed to be layed out more expectantly, or maybe I'm reading more into it there than you intended, but I think that was very well done.

A lot of the stuff seemed to make sense.  Harry being the only one to know that Percy was undercover is a willing suspension I'm prepared to accept.  Although I don't think that can logistically work out.

You could have probably expanded the story to a chaptered story, but I think it would have lost its impact.  I don't know why I didn't see the link to this before on PS.  Just showed up under October 5th update recently ... weird.

Anyhow, congratulations once again on a spectacular job.  This is amongst the best one-shots I've read.  And believe me I've read a LOT :)

A Fairy Tale Ending

I congratulate you on several things:

First what is, as far as I know, an original idea.

Second, a well-written and executed story.

Third, a series of incredible scenes of Harry (who is still Harry) growing up again.

However, I have to stick in one negative point. I don't like the ending. It feels... incomplete? I'm not sure how to express it, but it doesn't feel like the story ENDS here. It feels like a chapter break, not the end of a story.

Regardless, this is a wonderful fic and I'm glad we didn't wind up with Death Eater Percy (though why Harry didn't mention about him being a spy earlier...)

What a lovely, lovely story!  Not your typical fluff, either.  I absolutely loved it.

It was so interesting watching Harry grow up without having to worry about Voldie.  Although you did scare me a couple times with Giselle; I love them as friends, but even putting aside my rabid H/G shippiness, I had issues with them as a couple.  After all, they were raised as cousins.  So I was happy when they broke up.

The Draught is definitely something that Ginny would do.  I can see her knowing about it and keeping it in the back of her mind, and one day just impulsively doing it.

A Fairy Tale Ending
(Back in a tick.  I've got to dash off and wipe my eyes before people start wondering why I'm crying at work)

THIS - WAS - SIMPLY - EXCELLENT.  What a wonderful, wonderful idea!!!  You had me hooked immediately as soon as you introduced the notion of Harry reliving his past life, one day at a time.  The various scenes as he handled the past events were wonderfully done, as was the suspense in trying to guess Ginny's fate.  Just the sub-plot of how Harry would liaise with his parents/best friends as he matured was a fascinating concept.  Plus all the little things you've come up with, such as Hermione's suggestion that Harry take advantage of learning twice the number of subjects - excellent!

Just looking over your story again, I'm wondering if perhaps you could have had Harry pining over his memories of Ginny once or twice in the tale before the climax.  Waking up and remembering how, 'that same night' 17 years ago, he and Ginny had kissed/talked/whatever.  How she'd helped him get over Sirius's death, etcetera.  Just to build up the romance a bit more in the reader's mind, establish that Ginny was his one true (lost) love, etcetera.  Most of your readers will have that idea firmly in place because of the other fiction on PhoenixSong anyway, but perhaps your story could be 'strengthened' a bit that way in its own standing?

Please please please write an epilogue to this story; it finished too soon for me!  I understand how you wanted to conclude the story proper with Ginny's waking as its climax, but it would be so much fun to read a brief 'outtake' after the fact, with Harry & Ginny just 'picking up' where they left off ... discussing the complexities of Harry's having two sets of memories (one with Ginny, one without); Ginny meeting Giselle; Harry would be going back to Hogwarts, would Ginny also?

Simply brilliant.  Now to print the story and then look up everything else you've ever written ...

Thank you very much for sharing this with us!

As I mentioned when I first read it, I love this story.  What a wonderful plot bunny!  It's too bad you didn't take the time to flesh it out more.  I would have really liked to see why Harry and Ginny were in love during Harry's first life.  We need to know whey there was sexual tension between Harry and Giselle.  What guarantees did Ginny have that Harry would be in love with her again?  She didn't know that he would be reliving his first life in his dreams...

All in all, a great story, witty dialogue, and great characterization...just poor execution.

I am currently hyperventilating, and shaking like never before. That is how brilliant this was. But it can't, it just can't be over. Not so abruptly, at least. Please, just add something small. A sequel. Please. Just to truly conclude this and to satisfy our apetites! Don't leave us hanging. You are one brilliat writer. You truly have what it takes to become a professional writer. All during the story we where waiting to see what was going to happen to Ginny, and now that we know the truth about everything, and that she's just fine (btw, you sure as hell know how to build up suspense) you just finihs it off. I hope that the fact that you didn't write the end tell sus there is more.

Brilliant.  A wonderfully original story carried out with aplomb.  I particularly liked the fact that you ended it as you did, although it does leave me widhing that you'd write a follow-up even if it isn't necessary.  All in all, you'll get no complaints from me, not for this story anyway (I mean Harry/Cho in Adaptations??  Honestly!)

A Fairy Tale Ending
I'm not entirely sure that Harry's choice not to talk to Mrs. Weasley -- or to anyone else -- about Percy until after he relived the final battle is entirely in character.  Harry has grown up aware of the pain the Weasleys feel about Percy; I think he might have tried to tell them something earlier.  At the very least I think he would have devoted serious thought to the issue - serious enough thought to possibly merit larger inclusion in the story.  (From a dramatic perspective, I fully understand not mentioning any earlier than you do, I just found when I read the story the second time that this detail sort of jumped out at me.)

I'm also curious about Giselle.  Harry mentions her name in the endpiece, but we don't know what happened to her.

Having said that, this is a brilliant piece, and I wouldn't be surprised if it rapidly becomes considered a classic.  I'm genuinely envious of the plot bunny, and quite impressed with how well you brought it off.  Bravo!
