You are right as far as I've been able to determine. Hermione was born in 1979 in Septermber.

Enjoyed the first one and am looking forward to this one. Never sure wether or not to review stories that are a couple years old, but wanted you to know. I am also enjoying the christmas carol one you are doing now. That is what lead me to these.

Good beginning. There's something going on with Dudley. Could it be the gun on the mantlepiece? Can't wait to find out.

Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned
i have just read the power of emotion and curse of the damned, and all i can say is wow. fantastic. i especially liked the way you wouldn't let Ginny let harry bugger off and kept them together, i don't believe she would have let harry go after waiting so long for him to finally get a clue. the exploits of drunk harry were also really funny and really added something to the story as lets face it kids do do that. it's a shame charlie died but as you said a fam the size of the weasleys it's kinda hard to believe none of them would become a casualty, shame it wasn't percy though lol.

thanks for a great read, and keep it up

Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned
Hi Melindaleo!

Just wanted to post my review- it's pretty much the same as everyone else- i LOVED it!! I thought it was extremely well written and a fantastic read. The battle scenes were awesome !! very thrilling and action packed!!. But i have to admit that there were a few scenes that got me a bit teary too!!
I love that you made Ginny (and harry's love for her) an important part of the plot. I was a teensy bit disappointed that she wasn't in the final book a bit more (although i can understand why JK did this)
It was nice to have the bit of romance in your story but it never felt like i was reading one of those trashy romance novels- romance just for the sake of it. i really like how you made the whole concept of love as a way of destroying Voldemort a key theme in the story. Before HBP came out i thought this might be an avenue that JK would have gone down herself.
I've also read the Power of Emotion and thought this was just as fantastic! You're extremely talented and i hope you go own to write and publish your own stories sometime in the future.
Although i do slightly prefer (sorry!!) JK's series i've really enjoyed all of your stories and they've certainly helped me with my Potter withdrawl!!

This is FANTASTIC. I have now read all of your work and am now suffering from withdrawl. I can't decide which one I like best as they are all great. Please, please, please tell me that you are writing some more stories. The longer the better I have to say. As much as I love the shorter ones, one page is just not enough!

This makes three great story.
As I said a couple weeks ago I started with seven horcrux which I gave ten out of ten. This was very good BUT I still think the seven horcrux was better, so only nine out of ten for this.

I have now read all three of your major works in three non-stop weeks. That shows my high opinion of your work
I greatly enjoyed your style and am wondering if you have ever published an works under your name; I would be interested in reading them.

Thanks for the enjoyment you have given me

Yeah it does make more sense to have Hermiones birthday before.. It doesnt seem to make sense. Well this was a good first chapter, I couldnt help but laugh at the things Bill did.. if only Harry would tell him how much extra it was causing him! those Durselys, they know he's supposed to be recovering!

Oh, poor Harry! I just want to gather him up into my my arms and give a huge hug.

I noticed the note at the end about Hermione's age. You probably know this by now, but I read somewhere (probably the FAQ on jkr.com) recently that Hermione was older than Harry and Ron, so you're perfectly entitled to have her take her test now. *g*

A wonderful start, Melindaleo! Although I do feel a bit sorry for Harry, with Dobby as his nurse! Bill transfiguring the room had me grinning viciously. About b****y time! And just let anyone try to help themselves to Harry's new stuff... Weasley retribution is a dreadful thing.

Harry didn't receive his on his eleventh birthday - that's canon.  Hagrid burst down the door on Harry's eleventh burthday - when the Dursleys had been on the run from those owls trying to deliver his acceptance letters for at least a week or more.

Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned

For all her greatness, J.K. Rowling is a terribly sloppy writer, and she herself knows it, too! She's notoriously bad when it comes to birthdates, deathdates and ages.

I don't remember her saying that children receive their acceptance letter on their eleventh birthday. Not that I'm not willing to take your word for it, but that would add another contradiction to a long list of contradictions. As we all know, Harry started getting Hogwarts letters before he turned eleven. Hagrid wasn't dispatched until just before the reply deadline to make sure that Harry got his letter.

I think all children eligible for Hogwarts get their letters somewhere in July, including those who aren't eleven yet, but will turn so before the cut-off date. Ginny's birthday is the eleventh of August, and Percy's is the fourteenth, (if my memory serves me correctly) according to the information on J.K. Rowling's official website, which can be considered canon.

As for Hermione, her birthday has also been confirmed, and I do recall J.K. Rowling saying that she was the youngest of the trio, though for the life of me I can't remember when or where, so I can't give you a URL to back up my claim. Hold on, I remember. It's in the JKR-approved timeline on the CoS DVD.

Maybe J.K. Rowling decided that Hermione was to be the youngest and wisest of the three, but due to her innate slopiness failed to pay attention to the cut-off dates wielded by most schools when choosing Hermione's birthday. It's also possible that she didn't pay close enough attention when the timeline was submitted for her approval, of course.

Since I am on a roll here, (I'm not one of those people who like to hear themselves speak, but my passion for your work is really bringing it out in me) I'd like to comment on tmh's comment and your answer to it.

Like I said before, J.K. is sloppy, (and the Harry Potter series are still primarily children's books) so there is no use in following logic. I'm going to provide a couple of possible explanations for Harry's treatment and Dumbledore lack of action to stop it.

1) His hands were tied. For the bond of blood and the protection to work, the Petunia had to voluntarily allow Harry to live with her. Any intervention on Dumbledore's part to 'convince' her to treat Harry better might have made Harry's acceptance forced, thus rendering the protection useless.

The flaw in this explanations lies in page 737 of the first edition of the Birtish paperback. 'She may have taken you grudginly, furiously, unwillingly, bitterly...' The word 'unwillingly' invalidates my argument, but maybe it's just another case of J.K. being sloppy and using unwillingly where reluctantly would have been better. After all you can do something reluctantly, but still be technically willing. But I digress...

2) A more likely explanation is that Dumbledore's own morals (some would call it squeamishness) got in the way of his threathening with magical retribution to force his will on Muggles, thinking that it would make him no better than pure-blood (or half-blood like Tommy boy) wizard supremacists despite any good intentions on his part.

Anyway, a great start to the sequel.

Monday 22nd November 2004 07:36Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned (Author Response)

Wow, I never expected Hermione's age to become such an issue, lol.  I promise, it really won't effect any major part of the story expect that she doesn't need to go to get her license.  I doubt canon will ever give us an exact answer, but JKR as freely admitted she's rubbish with math and has adjusted dates before, so...

As for DD, I'm not sure we'll ever get a clear answer there, either.  But I do think DD let Harry down in a huge way by not interferring at Privet Drive.  After third year, in particular, when Harry ran away, I would think that would be a huge alarm bell that his home life had problems that needed to be addressed.  So unless DD talked to them "off camera", I'm annoyed he just sent Harry back again at the end of the year.

I'm fond of Bill, as well, and hope he'll be used more in the coming books.  Ron and Ginny show up in the next chapter, but it'll be several more before Hermione arrives.  I can't stand that she's never with her parents, so I had to give her some vacation time with them.

I think it’s because I’m worried about the expectations....

Time to stop worrying, your last story was brilliant, I have read it twice and its wonderful. This story seems more mature than your last- your style and writting are better developed, your character portrayal is right on and I am sure it will become a great story. Its hard to write- it takes such a commitment - but fans to appreciate your writting and stories. I will await all your updates, and will just say- stick with it, its very promising and well done. As a firm H/G fan I always love to see more about my fav couple.

Don't worry about our expectations.  You have obvious talent!  This is an excellent start to the sequel.

It will be interesting to see how well Harry hides his problems from Bill & Ginny.  I understand what Bill is trying to do but it's lame that Harry ends up paying for it.

Keep up the awesome work!

Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned
I enjoyed this chapter, but I have a couple of point I would like to make.  It doesn't appear that The Order or Dobby are watching over Harry as much as they said they would.  The reason I bring this up is because it was suggested that he would not be abused while at the Dursleys' but here we see that he is being forced to cut the grass, wash the car, and other chores  even though he is still very weak and sick.  Where are the guards around the house????? Why aren't they reporting this abuse?????  Where is Dumbledore in all of this,  why hasn't he gone to the Dursleys and confronted them about their cruelty to Harry and threatend them with wizard legal action for their horrible behavior?????  I love this story very much but I feel the the wizard side of the equation is rather timid when it comes to doing what is right, a very simple solution would be to let it slip to the authorities how badly Dudley behaves in the community and I think the Dursleys would begin to toe the line.
Sunday 21st November 2004 09:01Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned (Author Response)
But canon shows us that this happens all the time and they never interfere.  They are behaving while Bill is there, and, so far, they haven't been to Harry's room where Dobby is.  Harry himself is making the mistake of covering up what is going on.  The way I picture it, there is an Order guard stationed at the front of the house, but most of Harry's chores happen inside or in the back yard.  You won't have to wait long, things begin to blow up next chapter.  Personally, I've never understood why DD hasn't interfered after Harry arrived at Hogwarts underfed and less happy than he would have liked, as he put it, but so far, he really hasn't.

Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned
Grim beginning.  Not as upbeat a start as I imagined.  But then again, being with the Dursleys isn't supposed to be very pleasant for Harry.

As for expectations, my advice would be not to think of it too much.  Just concentrate on the task without thinking about the results and expectations

I'm sure the story will turn out to be great ... looking forward to the next update.  Even though it may not be as fast as before!

Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned

Thanks for a great first chapter.  I'm so glad to see it appear sooner than I had hoped.  I really look forward to reading this story, and have faith that you'll find it within you to surpass all of our expectations.  You always have.

Petunia's characterization of Bill as looking like a gigolo was wonderful.  His creative campaign against the Dursleys shows him as truly a Weasley, and a real brother to Gred and Forge.  I do hope that it won't add more stress to Harry's recovery than he can stand.  I liked your treatment of Bill, who seems to know when to push and when to let things go.  It's nice to see more Weasleys allowed to visit.  I'm sure that the sooner Harry is returned to his real family, the sooner he'll be able to put his physical trauma behind him and the spiritual trauma into better perspective.

Sunday 21st November 2004 08:41Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned (Author Response)
Thank you!  Glad you liked Petunia's gigolo comment, that amused me, too.  While the twins are the most outrageous, I tend to think of all the Weasleys (sans Percy) as having a good sense of humor.  I've always liked Bill.

Great beginning; I'm feeling really sorry for poor Harry right now.  It looks to me like he's suffering from PTS.  Is that right?  I'm glad Ron and Ginny are there.  It'll be good for him.  Please get Harry back to Grimmauld Place asap!

Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned

Hi Melindaleo,

I just want to say this story is FREAKIN' AWESOME!

My only wish for it is that you get plot bunnies from heck, so that this story flies quickly out of your imagination to your puter! Having your beta work that quickly would be a plus!(Need a 'pre-beta'? I don't know what help I could be, but getting a sneak peak at whats coming would be cool. LOL)

Well, since we have approximately 6 weeks in Duranceville(Or is it Durselyville) for our hero, and that I'm a trifle evil--A miffed Dobby might be a nice thing to happen. Perhaps a lil ole curse on Dudley that made him want to be studious, energetic/exercise alot and lose weight?(Ok, that might be too nice for the little wanker.) But my thoughts were to have Aunt Marge visit and notice that he wasn't the nice "manly, healthy sized" boy anymore..

There is a fic on SQ that Gred&Forge made a wheeze called "Harry Hair" (It made the victim's hair behave/grow and look 'windblown' like Harry's.)if I could wish that on anyone, it would have to be Vernon.  Ok, its not too evil-I'll leave this topic before I let my imagination run too wild.

I enjoyed the paragraph about Ron and Hemione's Apparition Tests. Since Ron didn't pass his 'first test of adulthood' as I think of it, I can see him irked both at himself and Hermione because she DID pass hers.

I like what you are doing with Harry. He is still the 'heroic young man' he has always been. Allthough he is dealing with the trauma of being a P.O.W. as well. Leaving the lights on, the tremors that could be physical as well as psychological. It just makes me wonder at the marvels you are going to put him through next.

In closing may I say this- and thanks again for the enjoyable chapter and stories,

Takon

LOL, I'm glad you're enjoying.  I won't say how long Harry is going to be here, but I will say that Aunt Marge won't be visiting.  I don't think I could write anyone that verbally abusive to Harry, it would stress me out!

Harry still has a lot to go through, but he'll get there...eventually.

I'm going to keep this simple as I ran out of ways to say this, far to soon last time around... Fantastic

And this line:
They were about halfway to Surrey when Aunt Petunia let loose a tirade against Bill. “Just who does he think he is? Assuming he can tell us who to allow in and out of our own home. I will not have anyone looking like…like…like a gigolo entering my home.

Absolutly brilliant!

Harry Potter and the Curse of the Damned
I am excited about this story. Poor Harry, I hope something ends up going right for him. I'm interested to see where you take this story, the first chapter has caught me. Update soon.

Thanks, I hope I can keep you then.  At the beginning, it's going to be Harry's struggle in dealing with the aftermath of PoE.  Eventually, Harry will pull it all together to do what needs to be done, but a lot of stuff happens in between.  Confused now?  I hope it will entertain you.
