Muggle Misperceptions of Wizardry - Part 2: Persecution
- Witch hunts in the Middle Ages
- Convicts in the British Empire
- Madhouses
- Witch Hunts
- in Middle Ages people were taught by religion that witchcraft was evil but they didn't recognise true magic
- suspicion built on natural disasters e.g. failed harvests, sickness (esp. when Ws survived plagues)
- Wiz.s tried to blend in:
- in those days muggle clothing was similar to Ws
- Mug. healing techniques were similar in regard to potions, but didn't use magical ingredients
- at that time Mug.s still believed in powers of familiars, esp. cats, bats & COWS(? stupid muggles)
- Muggle superstitions:
- have to hold hand over your mouth when you sneeze, yawn, cough or your soul will escape from your body (dementors do it better)
- people wore amulet of herbs around wrists and necks to ward of evil
- believed fortune-telling was demonic (just ridiculous)
- trials were held but used unreliable/lying witnesses, made up stories (can't trust anything Ms say)
- hysteria-induced accusations
- Ms thought close proximity to a W would make them evil or send them to hell
- people accused others before they themselves could be accused
- punishments incl. burning at stake or drowning in river
- most people punished not actually Ws but muggles falsely accused
- Wendelin the Weird enjoyed burning - got caught approx.40-50 times
- Methods of escaping punishment
- trial - obliviate judges, members of court & disapparate from courtroom
- drowning - Bubble-Headed Charm or gillyweed (not preferred because if Ms saw anatomical changes would confirm suspicion of being W and then try burning)
- burning - flame freezing charm, inflammable potion
- but Ms couldn't kill Ws - no record of any W or W dying as result of witch hunts - all victims were muggles (again - stupid muggles)
* Witch hunts -> muggle perception of Ws: EVIL
- Convicts
- overcrowding in prisons due to incr. crime rate in 17-18th centuries (due to Industrial Revolution)
- some Ms still superstitious
- believed in witchcraft, but most now thought in scientific rationalist terms
- magic could not be explained -> did not exist
- became parlour tricks: magicians = attraction / entertainment (like a mouth organ that plays itself?)
- also time of colonial expansion / exploration
- poor Ws survived by transfiguring small items into food/clothing, some even built homes like this, others conjured goods for their survival - Ms jealous that Ws had food/clothes - reported them to authorities
- Ws (and Ms) arrested + imprisoned on little/no evidence except possession of small items
- prisons became too full, petty crimes by poor people punished more than crimes of oppression perpetrated by the rich (one day the rich will pay -> TOM RIDDLE)
- British govt sent convicts to colonies across the world
- treatment of convicts harsh but Ws survived well, managed to escape easily once in the colonies, set up own villages away from main settlements
- some Ws in Britain got caught purposefully to get transported to convict settlements
* Convict colonies -> muggle perception of Ws: CRIMINAL
- Madhouses
- rise of psychiatry led to medical view of Ws - anyone claiming to be magical classed as insane, locked in madhouses, studied as freaks of nature/people with sick minds
- most famous insane asylum: St Mary of Bethlehem in London - known as 'Bedlam'
- many Ws imprisoned in asylums, without wand or clothes, had no means of escape. Treatment very severe - like animals or scientific experiments
- combined with witch hunts, asylums main reason Ws went into hiding from M society
* Madhouses -> muggle perception of Ws: INSANE
Summary
Persecution indicates Muggles perceived Wizards to be:

A/N: Much gratitude to the amazing Jeconais – who sacrificed more than he anticipated in the production of this fic! Thanks to Gypsy who thought this was a cool idea and understands more about Tom Riddle than is strictly healthy, and to my fabulous beta Tante, the Queen of formatting notes! And I couldn't have done it without my primary school teachers who taught us all about witch hunts, colonies (I happen to live in one) and insane asylums (no, I don't live in one of those).
